Report New WinCustomize Bugs and Other Issues

While we have worked very hard to make the new site error free there are always a issue here and there that were simply missed.  So this is the place that we would like you to submit site issues to.

Please take the time to read through items that have already been submitted so that you are not duplicating issues.   This will make it much easier for us in determining new or old bugs.

Also, when reporting a problem its very important that you include the URL to the page where the problem occured.  Also be as descriptive as possible.  And if it is a display issue please be sure to include what browser you are running and its version.

Testing the new quote thing...it looks a lot better now, but I have a request/suggestion. Would there be anyway to have it automatically reference who the quote came from and which reply? You know, like how other forums do it, otherwise all this out-of-context quoting is confusing. @_@

I keep getting an error when trying to create my personal WinCustomize page. No explanation, just says there's an error. Please use back button blah blah........

Have I been blocked from having a personal page or is this just another odd error?

Someone else was having a problem too, something about having to change the nick because it had invalid characters. o_O

Humm... well I don't have any underscores. Maybe it has to do with the capital letters? Perhaps someone in the know can assist me so that we can avoid another situation where I am mocked for months because I complained?

Thanks

Just so that I am crystal clear with THIS complaint, I thought I would post a picture of the screen I recieve upon trying to create my personal page. I don't care for a repeat of the fabulous customer support I recieved concerning another "signup" problem here at the Stardock franchise.

Should there be any further questions as to my ability to submit text to the three fields that one must submit to, to get a personal site? I will gladly do a video with Camtasia so that we are all clear on the situation. All any reasonable person needs to do is ask.

Thanks,

Corey

Right now PC I believe there is a problem with this - Ive had a personal site for years . Yet several times a day when I click on my ' site " after logging in it takes me to the page to create a WC site...I have to click on my site several times to get it to load and sometimes it requires logging in an out again.

GuyPC.. Your site is up and running now.

Thats odd - when I click on his user name Im seeing his profile but it doesnt have the tabs for gallery etc like the WC sites and the URL is :

http://users.wincustomize.com/1271031

Doesnt have his name in the url.
If I type in my own URL with his User name :
http://TheGuyPc.wincustomize.com/
I get WC 404 error
( using FF 2.0.0.1 )

Well poo. I was just about to debug this. If anyone else runs across this, please let it fail and let me know. It's one of those things where we actually need an account that is failing with the site creation because we cant reproduce it straight away.

Fairyy, I've not yet seen that issue or had it reported. I've been sitting here for about 10 minutes clicking on the link to your site and it comes up ok each time. Can you provide any other information on that?

Just as a side note, I never dismiss anything that is reported to us, personally. A lot of the time these errors are very conditional, and with 2million + accounts, things sometimes sneak through. We had almost a month of beta testing with a pretty big userbase before the site went live. And well, there were just some bugs that only wanted to come out when we had a huge amount of traffic hitting the site. Sometimes conditions for actually seeing a bug in action have to do with a user's pc configuration, their individual browser install, their account specifically, or some other variable that only a psychic could predict. We'll always do our best to reproduce (in order to debug) an issue, but please bear with us, and please believe us, when every now and then we say that there are just some bugs that we have a heck of a hard time getting to show up and occur.

Yeah ditto. That link right there is how regular profiles are looked at. So mebbe his site still isnt created, which means I can debug that! Joy! (You only get the tabs and stuff when you create a personal site)

I'll be doing some work on the personal sites/profiles today, so hopefully I can get this one knocked out. Along with some of the other issues the personal sites have popped up.

TheGuyPc, During debugging your site was created for you. http://theguypc.wincustomize.com is up and working. Thanks for pointing that out, you uncovered a good bug in the system. If anyone else if having issue with creating the wincustomize personal sites, we'll have a new publish up later on today that will fix the issue.

I'll try to get a SS next time it happens - it usually begins with a Check mark showing up where my user name is and the " create your WC account " flashes on for a second then disappears. On another thread I did see a few mention this last weekend. I remember one person saying that is was gone - then it was back..I cant remember what thread it was. Anyway, I've deleted all cookies and temp files recently so not sure if it will happen today...stay tuned...

Hmm if it flashes and then dissappears, it could be our logic mechanism hiding it, assuming its visible to begin with. It really should work in reverse. I'll have a look at it in the mean time.

Yes, and I didn't (not one single time) have a problem until you went live.

andrew, I have to ask.
Does this site use cookies?
I've looked in all my cookies folders (could only find one) and it's always empty. Even when I visit other sites and log-in, it's still empty.
I would like to think I'm pretty knowledgable, but if it doesn't have cookies, then how are the setting saved on my computer?
Or is this something new in IE7, that I haven't read about.
How are the setting saved?

I'm only guessing about the cookies. It might be something totally different, but whenever I've had a log-in, log-out problem, it's the cookies 100% of the time.
Yes, we use cookies. For several things actually, not just login. The forums use cookies as well. Perhaps your install of IE7 is keeping them in a place other than the usual cookies directory? Thats very odd indeed!

Go to C documents & settings ( your folder) or all users and see cookies

I have 1 mysecret@stardock[1].txt It holds the user info id

You should have that cookie when you are logged in...Maybe can find source of problem if that cookie is not there

Yes, I finally found them. I was looking in the Default User\Cookies folder.
I finally figured out that I still have the Hide Protected Files still checked.
Anyways, I found the cookies but I have (2) text files. (z71@stardock[1].txt) and (z71@wincustomize[2].txt).
I closed out IE7 and deleted the files and then did a complete system clean.
Came back and logged-in.
Still adds and no title above my name.

It is working today! Thanks.

I do have one question though. I would like to add my favorite skin which is Avenger by Mike Bryant. When I go to the "Favorites" section, it doesn't allow me to do anything. Here is what I'm seeing.

Am I in the right area? This looks like some kind of input dialogue box, but I can't input anything using either of the tabs (Skins/Articles)

Thanks again,

PC

Go to the skin itself - there will be a place to click on to add the skin to your favourites - it usually wont show up until you log in an out again.

since i haven't seen any updates on this issue, and the issue is still occuring. why is wincustomize not allowing firefox 2.x to save the correct login information. my firefox is set to remove all cookies upon closing, but when i come to this site, my login information is NOT in the fields, all that is there for the nickname is Nickname and not my password. i keep having to type my login information each time i come to this site. and since i know it will be asked, here are the steps that i take when i get here:

1. when first comming to the site, i noticed that my original login information was not in the Nickname/Password fields.
2. opened the password options in firefox 2 and removed the password in that was there for this site.
3. closed and reopend firefox and came to the site. typed in my nickname and password in the login fields.
4. when prompted by firefox to remember the password info, selected remember.
5. after leaving the site, and comming back, found that my loginfo was not there, instead it had Nickname and *******.
6. opened the password options in forefox to make sure that my password info was there and it was.
7. had to retype my nickname and password
8. firefox 2.0 did NOT prompt me to remember the password.

i have firefox set to remove cookies when closing the browser closes. if you need screenshots of my firefox config, just tell me where to send them

Not sure if this has been addressed or not (searched but didn't see anyone with the problem)...seems that I have become 23, Male on my personal info.    While being 23 isn't a problem since I have my 45th birthday in a few days   it does look kinda funny to be Ms. thecookiejar while it says I'm Male. I have changed it to Female many times, but it won't stay! Not a big issue, it's been like that since the new change on the site. Just wondering if it will eventually be changed.

c.j. woodfill the same thing happens here....The only thing that I have found is that if I type just the first letter of my login a dropdown with my complete login appears...clicking on that fills in both the login name & my password, then I click login and everything works. I believe that is why Firefox does not ask again to remember your login.

I as well have done the same processes as you with the same results. All of my other passwords at other sites work normally.

cjwoodfill, that's yer problem right there Our login system is cookie-based. If you would like to be 'remembered' as logged in the next time you visit the website (after you close your browser) you'll have to allow an exception for wincustomize, and not remove it's cookies when you logout. You'll also have to allow *stardock* cookies to remain. If Firefox is doing something wonky with it's auto-field-fill-in dealy, there's not much we can do at this point. That might be something we can look into juryrigging especially for Firefox at a later date.

Z71, If you see any cookies that have the [2] appended to them, nuke em. IE does that to use constantly (because we are screwing with our own cookies programatically to test a lot) and it usually borks something. Just to be safe I would remove any cookies with the [2] appended to the end. I'll have a look at the advertisement issue. Seems as though something is surely amiss.
