terpfan, I feel your pain. You just can't educate some people to uncheck that damn button. By policy all our end users are supposed to be in the users group, but then developers write apps that won't functions unless the user has administrator privileges. Adobe fucking sucks with their almost daily updates to their bloated reader. Is that 20MB download the update or the crap toolbar? I've started installing Foxit reader on all new builds. I leave mine on pretty much all the time. I know there are different viewpoints, but my experience has been that most PCs I have to fix due to hardware failure, the first words out of the users' mouth is: "I don't know how this could happen, I turn it off whenever I'm not using it." The problems you describe are usually caused by bad sectors on the hard drive, or a bad IDE controller. Switching OS won't help with hardware issues. If you just want to switch, I like Open Suse. With the exception of YAST needing an overhaul as an update tool, I think it's the most polished desktop distro. Fedora Core is good too. Windows is my primary desktop, mostly for convenience and compatibility, but OSX would be my next choice.

Vista is messed up and you have to agree with a lot of what he says, but, Linux is not the answer. I have to agree with Fuzzy. My employer's rollout of a Novell based thin-client (Suse 9.1) is running into one problem after another. And we are instructed to order all new Windows PCs with XP for as long as possible. After that, any PC with Vista pre-installed it to be wiped and have XP manually installed.

Note: apparently there is no Mac-friendly FTP client out there. At least once every week or two I get a call saying that one of our customers can't connect to our FTP server. I call them and ask: "So, are you using a Mac to try and connect?" Them: "Yes, how did you know?" Me: "Just a lucky guess. Does anyone in your office have a PC they can send this from?" If the answer is yes, they files usually appear in no time.

Which actually kind of pisses me off, as I WOULD like to be more familiar with Mac, frankly. That's what I've been doing lately. I have about 17 Macs to support, and about 200 PCs. I'm with vstyler and Phoon, gadgets/widgets just reproduce information I already have somewhere else, albeit with much more style. The only gadgets I would find useful are rss readers, but no one seems to have produced one that works consistently. I'm looking into what it takes to code a reader. Maybe someone with skinning skills can make it pretty if I get it figured out.

One thing Apple sells is confidence (on a larger scale they market is as a lifestyle.) Quality control of the components that go into Macs is generally much higher than what goes for the average PC.
