WIP ... critical comments needed in Docks WinCustomize Forums

Here's the situation. I'm doing a set of Object Dock icons. Originally, I was just rendering them at 128 because I thought that would be big enough. Now I'm seeing that some dock icons are done at 256 .... so I'm thinking that should be the size of the render. However, rendering at 256 is about 45 minutes for each render .... so before I take the project much further, I want to see if any of you have comments or suggestions that I should be incorporating in order to

Thank you. You know, I don't think I'll need quite as many permissions as I thought. The only images I wanted from the bundled ones were the ones that duplicated the original icons anyway. I don't need the ones that have been manipulated much. Here's what I'm doing. I'm going to post it in a separate thread for comments. I upped the size to 256 because I'm realizing that there are people who need dock icons that size. The original icon is in the lower left corner,

Nah, not so much. I just need to know which of the many Stardock programs I am supposed to use to create the dockzip. That thread seems more of a discussion of how to improve the process ... but not the basics of how to actually go about it.

Why not create a copy of the dock images and alter the transparency in your image editor?? That way could could make them match easily.

Me too. I'd hate to have a single rivet keep me from posting my dock icons, but if that's the way it goes, then ... oh well ... I'll just post the ones that are completely original (and I won't post the dock background). I'm hoping I'll have my answers (from Stardock and from Tiggz) in the next few days. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Because I want the images to match the K-TEK wallpaper exactly. Yes, I could make a rivet that looks exactly like Tiggz ... not a problem ... but it is faster to just take a snap of his rivet and stick it in the piece. It looks exactly the same either way, but I tend to be honest about things like this, and to be honest, I grabbed a shot of his rivet rather than make my own. OK ... finally figured out a way to post an example (old website space I haven't used in years). So, the rivet is by Tiggz ... the rest of the image is original by me. It's part of a recycle bin set that I'm doing. So, I ask permission for the rivet and pray that I get it?? I hope that Tiggz is a giving sort of person, cause it's really going to suck eggs if I have to make a rivet that is original, but looks like his. I'm not so sure it's all that important really. Honestly, I was just being lazier than all hell. I wanted to use one of the Rubik's Cubes in Mic Controller's RC trash indicator. However, I realized that probably no one else would be using the Andrea program (which was what I am using it for on my computer) and so, I really don't need to add it to a dockzip. And, I really could build and render a rubik's cube of my own ... I do have the technology .... like I said ... just lazy. <

Zoomba, I will email you an example of what I am doing. Of course it's a derivative work ... no question about that. In most cases I am taking the original 48x48 icon and using that as a "billboard" in my button render. Imagine if I were able to print that original icon on paper, then cut it out, then mount it in a steel rimmed and glass button .... the steel rimmed glass bit is my constribution, but the image I used for the cutout isn't. I found that as well, but that assumes that the person has posted to a forum. Not everyone has. I would hope that I could click on the person's name at the spot where they posted the icon and reach them that way. But ... no joy there ... just the link to their page ... which in one case shows the artist hasn't been online here in over a year ... so good luck with reaching him.

I would think you would go into Control Panel - Folder Options - File types and remove 001 as a registered file type. That should remove the association. Then, reboot. The computer should ask you what program it is supposed to associate with the file and when you don't choose one ... it won't open. If you don't have any application opening it, however, how do you expect it to open at all?? When you say "so that the filetype 001 opens with nothing" ... what do you mean exactl

I'm not actually taking the identical image and packaging it as a dock icon, so it's not a matter of adding bytes to the download. These are original images (by me) where I have taken some portion of another image, and manipulated it, and run it through my rendering software to get something else entirely. That poses a problem then. If the bundled images are someone else's graphics, and I can't tell whose they are, then how do I go about contacting the original artist to get permission?? I'll give you an example. I modified and used feather in the bundled Photoshop icon to make my own icon. However, I don't see any way of identifying who created the original icon. Oh, I agree, HG. There are some really beautiful images done on the computer. I hope that someday there will be galleries with huge screens so that people can really appreciate them. But, I doubt that computer graphics will ever rise to the level of fine art in an economic sense only because the primary value of fine art arises from its rarity. Oh .... got it. What about the graphics that came bundled?? Do I need to get permission from Stardock? No .... I guess not, since they provide those graphics to anyone with the program. Are the email addresses in the profiles? I would assume they would be, unless the site itself has some IM set up.

PS: Please don't anyone rip me a new one for saying Picasso and Hockney worked in "graphics." I realize there is a big difference between fine art and graphics work. That was really my point. So, actually, no one is making millions in good ol' graphics.

I'm fairly sure that almost no one is making "millions" doing graphics work. I say "almost" because there are the rare Picassos and Hockneys who reach that level, but most of the studio artists only make a decent living off it. As to the various groups who post or add content (and yes, I know I haven't added anything yet, but I just finished my first dock and about 40 icons to go on it), let's not forget that there is a fourth group -- those of us who purchased the software unaware tha

Of course, once I got the dock set up, I decided that I really had to do all the dock icons over again ... this is turning into a never ending project. I hope that packing them up and uploading them to the site takes less time. I understand I need to save the dock to a dockzip, and I would guess that I just need to zip the various dock icons up together? I made about a third of these myself, but some of the graphics came from the bundled images and one or two were derivatives

THANK YOU!!! It worked perfectly. I still have to tweak the ini a bit (because I need the dock to look different depending on what side of the screen it's on), but at least I have the bottom one working and it looks pretty good. Yeah!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
