Newb question: Why do I keep losing money? in Offworld Trading Company Stardock Forums

Hi there! I just started playing recently and am loving this game, but I keep going deep into debt, and I'm not sure why. For example, in my current game, I'm producing +1.17 food/sec (+2.38 from farmsx3, -1.2 from Level5 Scientific HQ), but I'm losing $229/sec in food costs. Why would that be the case?
