I hope you don't mind a math-geek type of response (and please forgive my nick ... I've backed away from this place, but I usually post as Cwth) These are some of Iraq's demographic statistics from the CIA World Factbook (2004 est.): Link 33.09 births/1,000 population 5.66 deaths/1,000

My understanding is that Chuck Cadman wanted to run as a Conservative but lost the nomination in one of those situations where a large recruiting drive in a riding's ethnic communities floods the local party membership. I wouldn't be surprised to see him joining the Conservative caucus or at least voting with them most of the time. The way I see this playing out is that Martin will rely on support from either the Conservatives or the NDP/Bloc

I have a couple of questions as a non-American. I hope these aren't out-of-place here or too off-topic. Does being a registered Democrat result from something you said when you were registered as a voter, and if so can you specify anything other than Democrat, Republican or (presumably) independant? Can you be a registered Libertarian? How easy is it to change, what does it entitle you to, and what obligations does it carry? Why I'

Ooh, is it out? I've been waiting for it too. I got the impression it wouldn't hit the stores in North America until August or something, even though it's been possible to order it from Europe for a couple of months now. My only problem is that I just don't know if I have time for it. Makes it difficult to justify doing something out of the ordinary to get my hands on it. I too would love to hear impressions. Have you hea

Not sure how to put this. To the extent that it presents other countries and cultures in a negative light, it doesn't sit well with me and never has. To the extent that he was presenting his view of the American character, yes I believe it is still accurate in the sense that it does a good job of representing the core of what I admire about America and Americans. It's no longer, unfortunately, the only America I see. There's a sort of mean

Ok, thanks. Clearer now I hope the tone of that question didn't sound too confrontational. It wasn't meant to be. This certainly is turning out to be an interesting election when you think that last fall a Liberal majority was a foregone conclusion.

When you say that's a record high for the NDP, you mean a record within the scope of polls conducted by SES, is that right? They've beaten 20% in at least one federal election (though not by much), and I seem to remember they were frequently in the mid 20s in published polls during the 70s and 80s. My theory about the big Liberal/Conservative swings is this: there are a lot of ex-Tories out there who spent the Chretien years wishing Martin w

Dharma, I'm curious. You've mentioned a couple of times that you can't have dual US/UK citizenship. Do you mean that you would automatically give up your UK citizenship by becoming a US citizen, or just that retaining UK citizenship after becoming a citizen of another country, or specifically the US, is discouraged? My understanding is that as far as the UK is concerned, you remain a citizen until you renounce your citizenship through official Briti

My first post here, so please excuse me if the formatting ends up being all over the map. It seems that this is all political. The same people who are approving of these "conscientious objectors" are the same people who are against
