Influence and minor civs.... in Galactic Civilizations I Stardock Forums

I am playing my first game of Gal Civ, and I like it. I am a bit confused about proper play though, and would like to know if there is some kind of guide to help me learn the game better. Also, my question regards influence. I have a minor civ of three stars within 1-2 sectors of my home system. I have several systems around it. I also have 3 starbases. My influence is pretty high.
