I think the combination of a couple of the above suggestions would work well: 1) supply & demand (raising or lowering the value based upon the number of societies already possessing the tech and the relative economy of the buying civilization) - along with - 2) being unable to trade tech you haven't researched would be the ideal combination. I'm new to the game, so I don't know if this is a glitch or by design. An odd things I've experienced is when playing the default humans, if I ramp up research production at the outset of a game I can obtain the universal translator in one week at the cost of about 16BC. However, if I play on a gigantic map, it costs more. Is this on purpose or is it a glitch?

I believe you need to add the cheats option, and then when in-game you need to select a ship of the species to switch control to and then hit - z, but I'm not sure.

The second serial number? Oh, it was there on the piece of paper labeled "collectors edition serial number" ...
