Quoting Rainman74,

Thanks for the information.  We believe we have tracked this down to your non standard scaling factor.  The OS options of 125% or 150% will be fine, but 140% triggers an off by 1 bug in something explorer does which confuses Start11.

Great, that sounds good that the error was found! I am now waiting for v1.4.5.3...

Regardless of that, I have to compliment you, because your Start8, Start10 and Start11 apps have been essential and professionally implemented apps for a long time now, which make the use of Windows bearable at all, with the "wrong decisions" made over and over again by an unteachable Microsoft far removed from their user base in the context of the taskbar and the Start menu. Only Start11 makes Windows 11 usable for me at all, because the original Win11 start menu is the most ridiculous start menu in all previous Windows versions.

Thank you!

I echo that sentiment!

I've been using Start8, 10 and 11 for about a decade now, on multiple machines (I personally own two Start8 licenses, five Start10 licenses and five Start11 licenses) -- and I could not be more pleased!

The Start8/10/11 software has been instrumental in making my PC experience better, ever since the Windows 8 Start menu redesign. What Microsoft does not seem to account for is that some of its customers are *not* willing to "embrace change", provided that they had been perfectly happy with the way in which the previous (Windows 7 and earlier) approach to the Start menu worked.

It is as such of great pleasure to me, to support the Start11 development efforts! Keep up the excellent work!

Please add the option to decrease the taskbar height. From 48 (windows 11 default) to 40px (Windows 10-before) so windows blinds 11 themes work properly. I tried the "vertically center the taskbar buttons" option, did nothing. Resizing the taskbar does opposite of what I want, I don't want it bigger. and I Don't wanna change the size to small, I just wanna decrease the height so the buttons fit properly.

Bug:   Start11 Taskbar "frozen"

- most obvious because clock stops working.

Screenshot:

Platform

Edition Windows 11 Pro       Version 22H2       OS build 22621.1848
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22642.1000.0

Other Running apps

  • Steam client windows
  • MechWarrior Online client
  • Several different types of Autohotkey scripts, some for hotkeys, some for always-on-top windows, some with callbacks to monitor session events (system locked/unlocked), etc.

Recreation Steps (doesn't always happen but mostly)

  1. Use mouse to activate MechWarrior Online client window, which is not full screen.

Current Fix/Workaround

  • Restarting Windows Explorer via a hot key
  • OR
  • Click on Start11 taskbar and wait a while, the wait time varies alot.

I had already reported the same thing above. The taskbar (including the clock) also freezes when I run a database update from tinyMediaManager. The progress bar then flickers very fast and during this time the whole taskbar is no longer usable until the progress bar is finished.

As we have told people before, that app isn't compatible with Start11.  It is also not compatible with Windows 11 itself without Start11 as if you fill up the taskbar with more buttons you will hit a problem with buttons going under it as the taskbar has no idea it is there.

Neil, I will add this to the 'known issues' information.

GitHub - zhongyang219/TrafficMonitor

I don't use TrafficMonitor and have the same problem.

What 'problem' is that, Rainmain74?

Hello,

I am using Start11 1.45 on Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.1848.

I've got 2 issues.

  1. Some of the icons are missing in the menu. It does not matter what start menu style I use.
  2. Hovering over elements makes the font unreadable in a bright theme.

See the screenshot:

Star11 menu illustrating the issues mentioned above.

Is there a way to fix this?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try this. Uninstall Start11, reboot immediately after the uninstall finished. Re-download Start11 V1.45, install it, reboot again after installation finish. Recheck and report back.

Thanks

During uninstallation, do I remove all settings?

When performing a database update on tinyMediaManager, the Start 11 taskbar freezes completely for several seconds/minutes and becomes usable again only after the update is finished.

This may be related to the updating of the progress bar (see red frame), which also flickers very very quickly during the update (felt 100 times per second), as if it is being updated countless times per second and the taskbar can no longer react as a result.

May also affect other apps.

Using: Start 1.4.5.x

Hello,

the icons are back, but the font color for highlighted elements is still white on grey. Is there a way to fix this or is this a potential bug?

Best regards.

Quoting TPScroggins,

Are you running Explorer Patcher or similar software?

I am running WPD with defaults enabled, as well as some stuff tweaked via Ultimate Windows Tweaker 5. But nothing that patches the Explorer process (both in-memory at runtime or the executable itself). Everything modified are Group Policy Objects or registry tweaks already available from Microsoft in stock Windows 11.

Quoting basj,

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Thank you,
Basj,

Really trying to avoid a purge. I use the Windows 10-like menu and have everything organized into super visual subgroups so I can find almost any program I have installed at a quick glance in my specific order (yay adhd hahaha). Purging the whole program and rebuilding that menu config from scratch by dragging/dropping every single icon again is going to give me a headache that lasts a whole afternoon.

Update on this: The latest Windows 11 update has fixed this issue on its own. My start key now maps to Start11 correctly.

Ya know, in the olden "Start8" days,  when all we wanted to do was replicate the look/feel of the Win 7 desktop, everything seemed to run so smoothly.  But as MS has gone from 8 to 10 to 11 and then 11-this, 11-that, it's become clear to me that Stardock is not keeping up -- on my PC, Start11 is acting more like a Github hack than a product that "integrates" itself in Windows.  We can blame this on MS and their haphazard development process if you want, but the fact is, Start*n* is not the escape hatch from arbitrary MS decisions that it once was -- at least not if you want crash-free, oddity-free operation.  When a product causes daily crashes by its interactions with Windows, it's not even worth the $9.

Having read your post in the other thread, I am afraid your issue is nothing to do with Start11.  It is highly likely you have some bit of hardware failing.

Our forums would be full if Start11 caused daily crashes especially BSOD!

I'm not sure if this is the right area, as it's not specific to this particular release, but with Win 11 and Start11, the "hide taskbar" ceases functioning without a explorer restart when the user brings up the snipping tool, even after closing the tool. It's very annoying

The autohide taskbar is a Microsoft feature not a Start11 one so if it stops autohiding then that should be unrelated to Start11.
