Griffinme - take it from somebody who knows, ratings are over rated. Comments are what counts. Besides, you're a registered user, you should be able to see your ratings. Check out the "About" link https://www.wincustomize.com/about.asp its clear on that point. Only Visitors can't see the ratings.

As long as we're still kicking this around, I'd like to clear up a summary of my opinion that was posted. While I did suggest a no-comment-no-rating approach or a vindictive rating watch as potential ways of improving the system, in no way did I feel the system _needed_ changing. My primary concern is that people download and use my stuff, secondary is comments, so I can improve my work, and last is rating. If I let ratings determine whether I continued skinning, I would have stopped

Black/white thinking? That's interesting. When the offence could conceivably effect you personally (a rip) its heinous, when it is unlikely to ever effect you (loss of a license fee) its petty. When one uses illegally obtained software its the same thing as someone porting a skin of yours without your permission. They may even give you credit but you have lost control of your it. Why is that any diffeerent? Another thought, how much of the price of a piece of software is

crae - There is no difference to see. In both cases the offender is profiting by the the unauthorized use of another's intellectual property. In the case of ripping the author is being denied recognition as author. In the case of warez, the author is not being compensated for the use of the property and therfore is not getting credit for authorship. The compensation may be different, but the result is the same. Both cases are stealing.

That was quite an amusing thread. I was going to post there but I held back, I've brought up warez and cracking there before and they all (with all too few exceptions) seem to think that that is somehow different. To be fair, I've downloaded a few MP3's but most, probably greater than 80%, are songs I already own on vinyl or I can't find otherwise. I'm not a saint but I bought every peice of software I use (except the freeware obviously) <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/sm

I left this thread to go off and learn how to skin Winamp when the thought occured to me, I skin Winamp everytime I do a Litestep theme, at least the player. The dialog boxes get skinned by WindowBlinds (which I also skin). How many steppers out there actually care what skin they are running on winamp? Personnaly I never open the thing. I've been running Makinarama since it came out and haven't changed it since. So here's my question, what else besides Windowblinds would steppers fi

Regarding screenshots, I agree with Jafo. I usually delete mine after the theme goes up anyway. If the stated purpose of a screenshot is to showoff your new modded desktop, which I think is a great idea, after a week or so it falls so far down the list I doubt anyone would drill down far enough to see it. If its to get comments on a work in progress, once the theme goes up what's the point of leaving there?

My opinion and my point is that treetog's and Alexandrie's stuff is good. Proof is if anyone does a reasonable port their stuff it goes like hotcakes as well. There is something in their work of which few of the newer skinners can boast. I just wish I knew what it was

Wise - If you are really good, I don't know that your last statement holds true. Just as an example from my own stuff, I got a DD at deviantart for "Etone" which is a nice theme I guess but I really just did it to try out some things. I didn't even know I got it until Nuvem told me (I used one of his walls). I thought Tutone was a much better theme. Well its apparent that people at this site and DeskMod like Tutone better while at LOS my So Gray theme is my most popular theme and n

Actually I'm in WiseOldMan's column. With an influx of new skinners you're bound to get a lot of mediocre skins. But what I don't see a lot of is comments, constructive or otherwise. It seems that only the best skins get comments and that no one offers constructive criticism to the lesser efforts. When ls.net was going strong (sniff) they could be brutally frank, but I never thought they were being cruel. Are we ignoring the new skinners because we afraid of hurt feelings?
