Well from what I read, if you don't match the comp's attack type you will only get the square root of the initial defensive value. But if that is true, having a 1 in each defensive category would equal a 3 defense against every attack.

You should only have one type of weapon category per ship, and if you notice, all of the computers ships will follow this format. Based on the calculations for defense, having at least a 1 in every defensive category would definately be a good idea, although I often go for defense in only one category since I load up on guns.

It is very distressing that one of my ships is now at 4x its starting value in HP. Just because a crew is more experienced, I don't think the ship itself would necessarily be able to take more damage. If anything it's offensive and defensive stats would go up due to it's crew's proficeincy at targeting and manuvering capability. If HP must go up with experience, perhaps the ammount that it goes up should be toned down. Just made ships shouldn't be at such a huge disadvantage compared to seasoned

Well, in my current game I'm trying the laser line, but it seems like the lasers have a lot more weapons with the same name. I think I even saw Phasors VII! This makes me wonder if they will be able to keep up with missles at the end of the tech line.

Aside from which line the opponent has the least defense against, which weapon line is the most useful? I've noticed that the damage for missles goes up farily quickly early on, and that lasers generally take up the least space. Anyone have a solid weapon preference and rational why it is best?

I was attacking hte Altarian Homeworld today, and one of their ships, a cruiser, had some riciculous D. He had 10 defense against my lasers, and had missles that inflicted 3 damage. To make a long sotry short, he was able to singlehandedly destroy a fleet of 3 of my medium class ships! Virtually every attack from me was for 0 damage. Oddly enough, when I left the battle viewer, my ship was still there (the last one wasn't completely killed when I left) and his cruiser was gone.

Due to something I cannot fathom, the game will no longer allow me to end my turn. Pressing the end turn button causes it to work as normal, but my next turn does not start and the button to end turn is no longer there, I cannot move my ships, etc. If I reload the end turn button is still gone, if I quit and then renter the game, the end turn button is back, but the initial problem will still reoccur!

One good trick is to immediately design a fast version of the colony ship. Adding engines to the basic colony module will only cause it to be built a trun or 2 slower, which is easily made up in the speed it will reach far off destinations. Also you can reland your initial colony ship to ensure that 500k people are on it instead of the initial 100K. Another thing, buy a colony ship for the first 3 turns, as it is awhile until planetary invasion is researched so whoever gets there first usually k

So far I've only researched Xeno Ethics in one game, and I picked neutral in that one, but what is the best alignment for bonuses. Certainly the 'Evil' choice in most of the random events is the most appealing... I really liked the neutral land bonus, but I haven't been able to build their learning centers.

What tax rate do you usually set for your Civilization? I've found 39% seems to work good, which I believe is the largest marginal tax rate in the US. Also, what production capacity do you use?

Yes, it increases the space on your ship by that ammount. Unfortunately, this means that you only get 50% more room if you reach minituarization 50, instead of getting double. Just check the available space on your hulls before and after miniturization, I think it rounds down as well though.

Alright, I was very suprised today to find a minor civilization based on a class 18 planet! I thought 16 was as good as it got. How exactly does a regular Civ go about getting a class 18 planet anyway? I know for certain they did not have soil enhancement since I was the one that sold it to them!

Yes, I've noticed that various Civs value the techs differently. In fact, I think it might even be related to the ammount of money they have total, as the Secondary Civs that come in with 5000 will give me most of that if I sell them my techs 1 or 2 at a time.
