Ideas for Galciv 2

Ideas for Galciv 2

Galciv needs an improved combat system.

Space Level
Introduce three levels of ship, which are more effective working together than apart in space engagements.

Fighter level
Small manuverable ships that cannot outgun larger ships in a broadside engagement and thus rely on speed on manuvorability to harry their larger opponents and reduce their effectiveness against the enemies batteships and cruisers. They are also quick to take advantage of any damage inflicted on larger vessals and thus gain bonuses against damaged larger foes.

Cruiser level
These middle-size ships, while they cannot beat battleships in a one to one fight can working in groups of two or three bring them down. But mostly they screen the flanks of the battleships against fighters, bieng armed with powerful enough guns to eliminate them easily and bieng agile enough to catch them. However fighters are a lot cheaper and can often overwhelm a poorly supported cruiser sheer.

Battleships
Armed with guns that can reduce lesser ships to scrap with a single shot and capable of taking considerable punishment due to heavy armour battleships are the most feared ships in any fleet. On the down side they have poor mobility and thus vulnrable to faster and more manuevrable foes unless supported by an escort of their own.

All three kinds of ships should keep upgrading throughout the game with technolodgy. (ie a battleship becomes a dreadnought as technology progress)

Planetery Level
When a transport or group of transports invades a system it takes up orbit in the target system. In order for the invasion to succeed those transports need to be protected from enemy ships as they carry out the invasion. If they are destroyed then the invasion ends. An invasion can last for months. The defender has a surrender bar that is determined by the courage, morale and loyalty of the defending planet. The attacker also has a surrender bar, this is determined by the average morale of a civand their own courage value. If the defenders break then any surviving population become citizens of the attackers empire. (but mantain seperate racial status and abilities).

admirals have a limited lifespan

Maybe you could increases this with techs like virus elimination.

One feture i would like to see in GalCiv2 is customisable ship design (those of you who have plade masters of orion or alpha centari will know what i mean) so insted of having standard ship designs you would chose the type of hull, wepons systems, engins etc the choce of componets would be based on tech level eg at the start of the game you would have nuclear drive laser cannons etc

Also Terror stars are brileant but have no ship to ship offencive capabilites there should be a way to upgrade there wepons and also there speed

i would just like to add my thorts to the no of stars vrs no of planits debate i agrre totaly with the just because you cant see them dosent mean there not there coments and would like to pont out three things
1) just because a system has one ore two jupeter size planets dosent mean it dosent have several small rocky ones as well
2) some systens may contain doble planets (ie were a planet and its moon/s are about the same size) or these gas gients may have erth like planets orbiting them
3) as long as a planet has aprox the same gravity as earth and is in the habitable zone it should be colonisable as if you have the tech to go to this planet then you can bild large biodomes or undergrond structures and if it has water it shuld be teraformable even with current tech just melt the water and intriduce plants that are geneticly engineard to take posonus gasses out of the atosphere and give out oxegen it would take a couple of hundred years but its posible
(ps scuze spelling)

How many Galciv players are going to wait 200 hundred years just to see some rock made habitable?

Terror stars are a little slow but then I guess fast moving terror stars would be a nightmare. And using them should earn you evil points.

You mean wiping out Billions of people and annihillating the star system is evil? :(

It could be read as such by some people, especially those being wiped out! :D

No. Wiping out billions of people is, apparently, never evil. Killing a few soil eating worms is most definitely evil.

Bumper stickers on the Metaverse would read:

"Save the Worms, Collect the Whole Set"

or

"Terror Stars don't kill people, people kill people"

What about "Terror stars dont kill people. Drengin, Altarians, and the Korx kill people." :)

But don't Good civilizations justify it by calling these people "unpure"? I've always imagined "Good" to be the "crusader"-type of Good, whilst Evil was the "Nazi"-type of Evil. And Neutral is where both elements exist within the same society. But that's another topic entirely...

On topic, one think I want to see is maybe the possibility of certain planets having habitable moons...

Even in evil civilizations there are "good" elements, hence the fundies and the alignment changes. The good civilizations certainly don't want to kill off all the fundies ;)

Wouldn't work, a planet would need to be at least as big as Mars to sustain an atmosphere. Our moon as far as satellites go is huge, most planets with moons have a lot of small ones, but as big as it is our moon could never hold a breathable atmosphere. You could have 2 bodies of similar size co-orbiting like Pluto and Charon, but these were not formed in the same way as the rest of the solar system. Given what we know about the formation of solar systems a binary planet would be very very very rare, perhaps immposible.

If by habitable you mean sealed habitats then almost any lump of rock would do, but if you thinking along the lines of moons orbiting gas giants, you can forget that one as well, the gravitationanl tidal forces wouldn't lend themselves to stable habitats also the gas giants are so intensely radioactive that unless your habitat had metre thick lead walls, all the occupants would die very soon after moving in.

Does anyone else think the ground combat needs improving? I would like to see some actual battles.(Although an auto-skip botton would be nice.)
I don't think they should last until the entire population is dead and I think they should last for possibly several months.

mmm. Ground combat should last only a little, representing the actual mayor invasion of the planet. A sort of resistance, tendency to rebelion and reduced production should last a few months/years. Maybe needing a standing military presence all the time.

Off topic: since all 4x games seems to have modules (the space map, colony managment, fleet, diplomacy, tech, etc) could it be possible to have a game with more than 1 module for each part? I get the idea because I love almost everything about galciv... except the map representation.

I would like more an interface like MOO, where yo dont have to sweep the space like with a brush. Its better when solar systems are very distant (like reality) and most of what is in the middle is only empty space. it's not probable for starships traveling to "meet in the middle" So all that matters are the actual solar systems. I dont like the idea of using nebulas or asteroids fields to "reduce movement". All this is like the first civilization (I hated to clean the map every time), this is space!!

Maybe there can be 2 ways of playing the game, using the same models for everything else. Since a lot of people have different opinions, giving the player the hability to choose what kind of game he wants makes everyone happy ;) The same goes for space combat, ship design and other stuff, all should be able to be turned off. Maybe if you build several "alternative modules" for each part you get a game that is in fact like 10 games. The Ultimate, build-your-own, 4x game. Modmaking could be better this way also.

Yes, but a planet is a large area to conquer. It would take a few months unless your enemy is totally outmatched.
