Feedback concerning Transgaming.
At last I took the risk subscribing to transgaming. Installed WineX.
First try was to do the installation of galciv via the HowTo of fusibou and Topy Paavola. This essentially means a step by step copy of directories with manual editing of configuration decks. No success. I totally mixed it up. This is probably my fault and not the problem of the Howto as i tried to take some shortcuts. ...well
Second try was the installation of the basic version of GalCiv. (this is the german version of galciv with an installation cd).
As there is a copy protection on the cd the basic game did not start probably because of this "feature" of the german version. So I copied the updated version - which in my case is a complete installation via Stardock Central - to the linux directory tree.
The copied game does indeed work. And it works fine!

No editing of configuration files!
The only tweak I had to do is in the configuration section of point2play: I had to change the installed memory of the graphics card (ATI RAGE 128) to 32MB. With this change even the movies are fine. Basic system is an Athlon 1,4 GH, 512MB. Software is SUSE 9.1.
Only hassle remaining is Stardock Central. I haven't got the slightest idea wether there is a chance of getting SDC to run in linux. Personally I don't think so.
I still have to ftp to Windows the saved Endgame in order to be able to subit to metaverse. I can live with this!
So my conclusion is: You can run galciv on linux.
Installation is simple enough as long as there is an installation cd at hand.
