I got the version free on Compuserve way back when dial up speeds were around 1200-2400 bps (and access cost $22.50/hour) and both Gates and Peter Norton were available on the forums there. They gave their stuff away for free to get people to due their beta testing for them. 'Course version 1.0 bogged my 286 down, locked up constantly and didn't provide much that DOS couldn't do. I always thought Gates was a jerk but Norton was pretty easy going guy.
As for the Flash, I believe that is closer to the way it was than most people might believe.
