The problem with bootskins - here is my oppinion and yes jafo, you will get your dollar ;)

- No 'popular' movie (effects) are allowed. <-- I'm ok with that one
- All the work has to be created by the author of the bootskin himself, so no Simpson skins or something else. <--I think is ok.
- It has to have a progress bar. <-- Of course!
- Cars, dolphins and girls aren't allowed (Styl skinner ducks for a flying tomato)<-- Agree
- The rating after a month should be above 7 or it will be deleted from the library. <--Don't agree!

Is like the problem with the objectdock library, the more easy the skins are to do, the more skins will be in the library (And you're right, less quality)

I would go for all of your guidelines but not for the last one. Because there are a lot of people and a lot of different tastes, and sometimes happens to me that I download a skin, I do a fresh installation of WXP and I forgot to backup the skin file, Lucky me is still in the library at Wincustomize. What if I get a bootskin and delete the file by mistake and for the low rating, is not at library anymore? Easy, do a backup of the skins you like!!!! I’m doing that. But what about people that doesn’t know how to or are not familiar with computers?

I hate to say it...but Styl is right...it has gotten a little out of hand. I typically don't even look at that part of the site because it does take a lot of looking before you find something reasonable. Heck...the boot skin from XP is better than some of them on the website.

travis just looked over at the newest additions, and agrees with styl...except for my simpson's skin (right after I made it I learned about the copyright stuff and haven't felt like taking it of the site)

I (for what it's worth), too, agree with style.

I'm certainly sick of them hogging up the newest additions list,some crummy bootskin gets to ride down the list but I've got an OD calendar that took days to put together and they dont get too.Can dump the whole lot of them for all I care.

Travis, 1 skin isn't so bad but there are some authors that are just uploading copyright violating stuff all over again and again. Its really getting out of hand and the downloads of the bootskins are insane, if people will make it up to 10 they should be hapy. I have 3 year old cursor xp skins that get more downloads in 1 day then the avarage total download of the bootskins!!

I think there should an option in the profile that does apporoxiamately the same thing. You could set the filter so you only see skins with ratings of 6 or better, but you could also have the option of seeing new skins no matter what their rating, and after a few days they are nolonger new so unless they have a rating of 6 or more (whatever you set) you can't normally see them. you could set the time/days for the newskins to be seen. Just my opinion. I don't like having my filter set down at 1 just so I can see new skins and comment on them because often the old skins with very low ratings get shown and quite frankly I don't like seeing them.

No girls? I don't think there should be no limit to art except for certain decency rules this site holds.

Bootskins are not wallpaper therefor should be allowed to exist on the site as long as they do not violate the rules on decency and are not ripped from other people's work.

Tech, The girl thing was refering to britney and so. But go ahead and hire a model so you are allowed to post the picture. Really, I think she would be happy to see that she is being published in 16 colors

The only one I agree with is #2. #1 is part of #2, #3 is nonsense, #4 will be neglicable when #2 is enforced and #5, mwah, I don't know. You'd get the "why was my bootskin deleted?" messages.

What about a permanent censor for the word 'bootskin'

Just about the progress bar; it is the part of the bootskin that is REALLY skinning. If not it is just a wallpaper that shows up when booting your pc

I think the bootskins should be handled like the wallpapers and not show up in the Newest Editions section. It's my only real problem with them since I don't care for bootskins. They're worse than wallpapers and should be treated as such.

My problem with bootskins...

Look at the flippin' Newest Addition section...15 out of 20 are stupid bootskins...That's seems a little ridiculous to push down the more desirable stuff.

i dont mind bootskins .. but the majority .. well.... *how to put this nicely* dont look like there was much thought or work put in to them ...as for the rips . any ripped skin should be removed .. if they dont have the original graphics authors permission it should be removed .. just as if they were WB skins ...quite a few have the orig makers copyrite info in the images ...could it be any more blatant? we all post screen shots showing others graphics .. but these arent screens, these are for download ..........

I do have to agree. I like the bootskin software, but I have yet to find a skin I really like.

One thing to keep in mind is that Bootskin is not really a finished product. If I recall correctly, development is supposed to someday allow you to different types of progress bars and allow something more than 16 colors and other things. If this is correct, then you could see an opportunity for some more "Artistic" designs. But the program as it stands now is a bit basic...and so are the skins.

Has anyone heard how the development is going? Is there going to be something more sustantial in the near future? Right now the whole thing is a bit aggrevating.

Why not just replace the whole section with a Trillian skin section?

I gotta agree with Styl. Lately the Bootskin section has turned into an 'eyesore' of repeat images with a few alterations in each one, not to mention the vast number of bad rips. I think the moderation method for wallpapers should also be apply for bootskins

Generating excellent graphics in 16 colors I think is a lost art form. I was hoping that the current state of "Bootskin" would spark a resurgence in the form. Unfortunately with only a couple of exceptions most of the bootskins lately seem to poor dithers of high resolution images. For those who are taking the time to create the few wonderful Bootskins, please don't stop!

All pretty good suggestions. I can't say I agree with the last one, though. If the first 4 were put into place and enforced, the last one wouldn't be needed since the flood of Bootskin submissions would likely decrease significantly.
