BootSkins - yet another thread....

"Ideally a bootskin should be not just a 16 colour picture...but either include a progress bar or at least 'relate to the boot process'.
Also the images need to be your own to use or have consent included."

Just something that's been sent out when 'rejecting' BootSkin submissions.

As with Wallpapers and Logons, a degree of moderation is required to limit what would otherwise be a sea, nay, flood of wallpaper images simply converted to 4 bit [16 colour] and 640x480 resolution.....something that really is well within the capabilities of most people who have reached the stage of wanting to alter their boot experience.

The 'skinning' process SHOULD be more than that...it should actually require creative input to achieve a result.

Let's try to concede that BootSkins in particular make a good first easy step into 'skinning' but not expect that a simple image conversion is sufficient to be accepted...

Good Point Jafo. I preferr stricter moderation because it raises the overall level of the skins and promotes working harder to make better skins.

alter their boot experience

I don't know why I find that funny.

what software do i need to make a complete bootscreen with progress bar? can you send me the link of that software plss
Reply #15 Top
Take a look at mormegils ToonBoot directory in bootskin dir
There you will an *.ini file as in all bootskin skins, but the difference is that part there the progress bar is programmed , X and Y cordinates and the pointing to that progress bar image...
Try to play with that skin and replace the progress bar and X and Y cordinates...
If i have right, it is as easy like that.

"Boss" skinners, have I right?

Yes...Cyberjack got it correct....just adapt an existing ini file to set coordinates for your progress bar...but remember...

Progress bar bitmap MUST be the same palette as the main image....

Forgive me if this question has been answered in the past cuz I realize numbskull bootskins questions are a source of frustration over there. I've used bootXP2.5 for some time now and I like it and don't really plan on switching but I was going to submit my current bootscreen cuz I think your users may enjoy it. Is my bootscreen .ini made with bootxp compatible with bootskins. Even though I see no reason why it wouldn't work I didn't want to upload it if it won't.

I don't know. download a bootskin and look at its ini and compare it to bootxps. I doubt it is though because bootskin's ini file is only a couple of lines. you also need the background bmp and maybe a progress bar bmp

thread seems to be stuck...

Travis, thanks again for the advice. Ya know I think I'll stick with the dock icons. BootXP does create the progress bar and background BMP's though.

Ok can someone fill me in on this.. Do I need to use the Progress Bar?

And if I don't, Would I then delete the stuff in the .ini file about it?

(sorry, im a newbie at this)
