If you're using version 1.01 it does this because the Snathi race is absent from the game. Snathi will be in version 1.02. and will be fixed in the next update.
This is fixed in 1.02. You don't have to download anything from the workshop to fix it once you have that update.

Even if you use version 1.02 as a test version, it will crash the same.
