How do you stay focused and on task?

Those of you who have been here for a while or before me know that I am DID.
It is an acronym for Dissociative Identity Disorder, meaning that keeping on
track to completion has always been really hard for me.

Anyway, what I am wondering is how people stay focused and on task until they finish up what it is they want, need or have to do?

What things do you do when it's time to step away to either remember to come back or to make sure you come back to task?

I have from 1 and up to 10 or 11 things running through my mind at any given moment and it seems they get crossed wires at times and or I forget to finish up what it is I would really like to finish. Only to return to it and be totally blank and spend an unknown period of time before it all comes back. Most of the time it is after I have left it again and in the middle of something else that I remember it all

weird huh?

anyway.... just wondering if something might click that others might make use of which could help some of the time if not all of the time...

oh btw, I tried making notes but I always seem to loose them *sigh*

I think I have the same problem. When I start a skin, after a day or two I lose interest about it. I can't finish something. When I make my homeworks, it's always like "I'll do it next day" and so on.
I hate that!

I have a problem kind of like that... attention deficit. But you know what, when I worked in the Emergency Room and ICU's it was kind of a good thing to have, since I needed to have the kind of mind that had room for multiple concurrent ongoing tasks. The atmosphere in those places is rather chaotic and fast paced, not leaving my mind time to wander at all. That and the knowledge that everything was really important... they are unique environments that I was well suited for.

Too much 'empty' time, then I get in trouble no matter how many or how few projects I am tracking any given minute.

I'm the same way...It takes me forever to get anything done

Actually one thing I have been doing for about the a month is:

I have pinned a small notepad(kept losing my notes too) right to the wall at my computer station...anytime I have a thought or remember something I need to get done...I drop whatever I am doing and run over and write it on my pad and pin it back up there

I have honestly accomplished more this month than in the last 6 months...My life seems to be so much more organized and simplified

exactly it be the bummers sometimes too

My wife prompted me about something that lent to this threds creation.

I stack things, she calls it building my walls. But really, after thinking about it a bit, to some degree it is building walls. But it is also attempting to keep those things around me that I want to do so I do not leave them and forget to finish them..

I haven't been feeling well for a little bit now and not out of bed all that much so we picked up a bed desk and I keep my laptop on it all the time. You should see the stacks of books, magazines, even a Watch Guard Firebox II Firewall and a external 7 disc SCSI CD drive

Thats what prompted her to bring it up about the walls. She asked me to move the CD changer off the bed and I did. WHile I was moving it she picked up her pillow off a stack of them I was leaning back against and she noticed the Firebox

shes not impressed to say the least...

Leo, you sound like my husband.  I always mention something like "remember that door that you were going to paint......last year?"  The response is "yeah, it's on my list...."  Which I believe is probably right under tubbing out the new race car and installing new heat in the pole barn.....

I think that everyone's brain works differently.  I have learned a lot about myself by paying attention to what I do wrong.  I have an incredibly good memory, but keeping it organized is a problem.  Certain things I can remember easier than others.  If I see something (like look at a room) I can remember exactly what it looks like even when I'm not there.  I can remember how pages in a book look (in school, when I was less distracted with "life", I used to just stare at text book pages and "remember" what the page looked like.  I could then "read" the pages in my head when I got to a test. Never studied at all in school....got in trouble when tests where about 'lectures' though....)  I now can remember just about everything I read and store tons of useless facts.  I also write stuff down and read it to put it to memory.  I ask people to "remind" me of things, because, even though they won't remind me, by simply asking them to it will put it to my memory.  With driving, I can ride the same route 100 times and not know it until I drive it myself.  It's just how my brain works But "Dreamcatchers" really freaked me out (if you have seen the movie, you can probably see why I relate to it.)

I guess the only way that you can get your brain in order is to figure out your strengths and weaknesses and work with them. Keeping on track is simply fooling your brain into thinking that you are still interested in the task.  It's as simple as Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: flying is simply throwing yourself at the ground and missing.....

KG, Ma'am you are spot on. I too have a photographic memory which has served me well over the years.

It has taken me a long time to realise my strengths and weaknesses. The problem is that some of my weaknesses are considered an attribute by others. How do you deal with that? As i said the other day i can be a pedantic son of a bitch which was bought home to me again by a friendly comment by Chad Ross (magazines/coffee table) you will recall. But in a similar situation your eye and attention to detail will be treasured by others. You can't win or can you? Do you accept who you are or do you try and change?

How do I what? ...what were we talking about?......

I don't know...I'm already onto another thread   Got bored with this one..... I really need to sleep one of these days.  I've been a bit of an insomniac lately (an average of 2 hours of sleep a night is "OK", right?)  I think IP and I would probably get along   Stupid thyroid meds either turn me into a slug or into a hyper zombie...gack.  Or, maybe it's the coffee...maybe an espresso before bed will help me sleep ...........

what were we talking about again?

i suffered a brain injury in 1982 that wrought havoc with my short term memory and left me scattered and disorganized. i made lists, revised them daily, and worked by them religiously (when i could remember where i put them). my short term memory has pretty much stopped playing tricks on me, but i still operate the same way using a pocket PC to do the sorting for me. works for me.
