I think that Kazaa and other p2p progs are abused, but if structured correctly could become an asset to artists.

As i've said before, its unfortunate that the majority of users are abusers...

Here's a question that noone here seems to have considered yet (if i'm mistaken, correct me).... Are the musicians getting anything out of the settlements that the RIAA are making out of court, and if any of these cases do actually make it to court and fines are imposed on the people who are found guilty of illegally downloading copyrighted music, are the musicians getting anything out of that?

They always do Keith and always have. I have no sympathy for the RIAA. This isn't about musicians. It's about rich executives who sit behind a desk, make money ripping off others work, and now want to sue little children. I say GO RIAA!! - To hell.

I look at it as record companies realizing that if they don't do something their scheme of ripping off customers and artists could be over. That's basically what they do... rip you and the artist off, it takes less than 2 bucks to make a CD, and they charge you 16 for it, the executives make way more money than the artists when all the talent and creativity comes from the artists. I wouldn't mind if the artist directly charged me 16 bucks for their work, at least I know all the money is going to them, but as long as the executives keep getting rich with their own old scheme with their own rules i won't give em a dime.

common people, if the artist didn't get enough money, they wouldn't sign the contract, because you buy their cd's, you begin to like them and visit their conserts, if there weren't record companys distributing their cd's they wouldn't get on mtv etc, so record companys do have thier point

Well, you are only stealing if you are keeping the music with no intent of purchasing the music form a record store OR redistributing it as an album or mix where you probably know that the user also has no intent of buying the artist's music. In a case like mine, I get the music from Kazaa, and if i like it, i buy it, if not, i delete it. Then, I make a CD for friends, and later, they buy the album as well. I think there is some pride in owning an artists album, rather than owning a bootleg.

Anyway, i'll REALLY be ticked off if the government takes action against P2P sharing. There are SO MANY other Pirating and theiving going on somewhere on the web or even in physical form somewhere down an alley in downtown NYC. But you know, what are we gonna do these days, we have an oil tycoon as president and the terminator as Cali's Governer. Hmm, good point Jafo. Still, I believe that if used correctly, this can become a great tool for most artists.

Oh.....using the net to pass the word about artists of all kinds can be a 'great thing'....but at the moment what we see is a bunch of kids getting 'something for nothing' [as is their wont], and justifying it by fatuous statements that the RIAA is 'stealing' from the artists anyway....[ignoring the fact of mutually agreed contract]....

I hope they win however they got some dutch people too, the problem is only that the providers don't give detailed information about the owner of the IP's

I dont even download music, I just hate it when ppl sue other ppl thinking that getting numbers in theyr bank account will solve everything. Im all for streaming though.
