There are some particular minerals that are required to complete some quests, for example, uranium for an early sidequest in the Sol system. You'll know it when you'll have to save a particular mineral type for a quest, and there are enough planets in the game to make completely running out of a particular mineral type practically impossible. It might take you some time to gather enough, though.
