Windows Explorer crashes because of Fences

Windows Explorer crashes because of Fences

After installing Fences 3.03 on Windows 10, every time while showing the desktop (by using Win+D or pressing show desktop button), Windows explorer crashes and then restarts.

We could observe the desktop is re-drawn and sometime there will be a dialog saying Fences cannot be loaded.

Again, the prevailing evidence is that that there is not an issue with Fences on its own; rather, that there are app conflicts that are out of our control.

I'm willing to help troubleshoot this with you.

I need a temp license of fences and ability to generate logs.

I started with clean install and tried troubleshooting the crash.

I was able to isolate after I installed Ultramon, nice support for 2 monitors.

After, with a combination of fences explorer crash all the times.

I installed ultramon and now it is working

Also having an issue with Fences for the past few months, in a similar vein.  It crashes on Windows 10 Enterprise unless I use a solid color background.  Then it seems stable but will not let me changes back to wallpaper slideshow through the personalize UI in WIndows.  When Fences is running on a solid background, I can select Slideshow but it doesn't change away from solid background.  I hadn't seen this behavior pointed out and thought I'd share.

Microsoft Windows 10

Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.2608)

This is my company system and is likely only going to be updated per the IT groups timeline.

That is really rather old, however.  We don't see the issue on any version past Win10 17XX.  What that seems to imply is that MS made changes because the slideshow was causing issues with other apps (perhaps).  The reason I can say that with some confidence is that we did not make any changes to Fences and it now works without issue on versions past Win10 17XX.

Hello, we have the same problem with Fences and Forcepoint TRITON AP-ENDPOINT Crash when we use the return to desktop button.

Everything is working great on my other personal computers, but not on my corporate computer.

I created a really simple workaround to bypass this issue. I created a shortcut pinned to the taskbar who calls a Powershell script minimizing all the Windows.

This is working flawlessly like the return to desktop button. I pinned the shortcut to the left of the taskbar (For a beautiful XP like return to desktop icon :) )

If people want the script i can upload it.

I’ve been using win+M instead of win+D to show my desktop - still hoping for a solution though

While not ideal, that is indeed interesting.  Could you post the script to a cloud drive (GoogleDrive, Dropbox, PastBin, OneDrive) - I would like to look at it.

Thanks,

I've used fences for quite a number of years and always had this issue to some extent but put it down to the laptop I was using, however having just upgraded to a brand new i7 16GB lenovo X380 yoga the problem persists and it's quite annoying.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more.

1) Windows version numbers. Use Winver.exe for full version numbers

2) Fences version installed.

3) Do you have Forcepoint/Websence or anything similar to it installed?

Thanks

I use this on my work computer and have convinced several others to do the same and we continue to have this problem. Several people no longer use the software because of it. I'd say the workaround using win+M instead of win+D is helpful -- but the other time this comes up is on splitting screens, and not as easily corrected.  Keeping my fingers crossed for a fix here!

Hi,

I was looking forward to this software to help organize my desktop, but I have the same issue mentioned in this thread and it's annoying. Showing desktop & opening task view makes windows explorer to crash . I can use Win+M instead of Win+D, but I'm using task view a lot to switch my apps between different desktop. I wouldn't have bought this software if I was aware of that issue... please fix and find a solution.

Win 10 Enterprise
Fences 3.0.9.11

So is there a path forward to fix Explorer crashes for Forcepoint/Websence users?

I remember that a year or so ago sdRohan was implying that the fix is just a matter of time, but time passes and not much is happening.

So what to expect?

I've been having Explorer crashes for close to a year related to Fences.  Two different corporate lap tops.  Both have had the purge performed.  One was a brand new PC with a fresh install of Windows and Fences.  I'm running Fences 3.09 but I tried rolling back to 2.0 and this was an issue with both.  Our company does not use Websense or ForcePoint.  Explorer would crash when I used Win+D, when dragging something to the lower right corner to the "show desktop button" (same functionality as Win+D), when snapping windows or documents to the side of the screen to go split screen with two items, and when I used remote access services I could not drag/drop from the remote PC to my desktop.  Removing Fences fixed all these issues.

I've changed my background to a solid color and the snapping, and remote desktop issues are fixed.  The show desktop functionality still crashes explorer using Win+D or the show desktop button in the lower right hand corner.

I'm running Windows 10.0.18362 Build 18362 but this issue has been happening over several iterations of Windows.
