Honey, I’m Good
Album: Magazines or Novels
Year: 2014
Andy Grammer tries not to cheat on his girlfriend in the outgoing “Honey, I’m Good.”
Good-natured synths open the single, setting a friendly tone. A shortened chorus opens the single. The young woman touches his hand and starts to order another round for them. He shakes his head, telling her he has a girlfriend. (“Na, na, honey, I'm good/I could have another but I probably should not/I got somebody at home, home, home, home.”)
He really wants to go home. Work went by so slow. It must’ve stayed 2 pm for five hours. His friends from work are still at their table, talking. But he got caught by a young woman. They started talking and then she began hitting on him. He had completely blocked out the singles bar scene and now he knows why. She has been pestering him about going home with her. He tells her that she’s attractive but he’s taken. (“It's been a long night here/And a long night there/And these long, long legs/Are damn near everywhere/Hold up now/You look good, I will not lie/But if you ask where I'm staying tonight/I got to be like.”)
In the chorus, he says he’s deeply in love with his girlfriend. The girlfriend that he lives with. Nonetheless, she is really convincing. He tells her goodbye and heads over to his coworkers. (“Oh baby, na baby/You got me all wrong, baby/My baby's already got all of my love/So, na, na, honey, I'm good/I could have another but I probably should not
I got somebody at home/And if I stay I might not leave alone/Na, honey, I'm good/I could have another but I probably should not/I got to bid you adieu, to another/I will stay true/ I will stay true/I will stay true. “)
He says his friends, who have vowed to be faithful, had a one-night stand while out. They regretted it later, confessing what it was a mistake and they have to make it up to their significant other. But he can’t do that to his girlfriend. The truth or guilt would ruin his friends’ relationships. (“Now, better men than me have failed/Drinking from that unholy grail/Now check it out/I got her and she got me/And you got that ass/But I kindly got to be like.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, he says she’ll be the right person for anothor guy hanging out at the bar. But he is in love. Love. LOVE. LOVE! Oh by the way, he did mention he’s in love? (“Oh, I'm sure you, sure you will make somebody's night/But oh, I assure you, assure you it sure as hell's not mine.”)
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Grammer seems to sense the unintentional comedy in the lyrics. The comedy being him constantly declaring his love despite wanting to act. A little. There’s the feeling that if he weren’t single, it wouldn’t be a problem.
The sociable “Honey, I’m Good” likes to tempt fate but he’s going to cave one night.
