Music Review: Natasha Bedingfield "Soulmate"
Natasha Bedingfield
Soulmate
Album: N.B./A Pocketful Of Sunshine
Year: 2007
After a series of dates, Natasha Bedingfield rethinks the soulmate concept in the defeated “Soulmate.”
A sorrowful guitar opens the single, setting a lonely tone. At the coffe shop, she tells him it was nice to meet him. As they walk to their cars, she thinks he was a good guy but they seemed more like friends than anything. However, she still believes she’ll find her future husband one day. He’s out there somewhere. She thinks he could be within her circle of friends or maybe she’ll see him while out grocery shopping. (“Incompatible, it don't matter though/'Cause someone's bound to hear my cry/Speak out if you do/You're not easy to find/Is it possible Mr. Loveable/Is already in my life?/Right in front of me/Or maybe you're in disguise.”)
In the chorus, she says she would like to share her life with someone. Usually, in relationships, she has to had to instruct her boyfriends on how to deal with her. They never instinctively knew. She doesn’t understand what she’s doing wrong. (“Who doesn't long for someone to hold/Who knows how to love you without being told/
Somebody tell me why I'm on my own/If there's a soulmate for everyone.”)
The guy gave her his resume! At the moment, she started planning a getaway plan. She wonders if it’s going to get any better. (“Here we are again, circles never end/How do I find the perfect fit/There's enough for everyone/But I'm still waiting in line.”)
An extended chorus is sung. (“Who doesn't long for someone to hold…If there's a soulmate for everyone/If there's a soulmate for everyone.”)
In the bridge, she says her last long-term relationship ended once she moved to a different place. It either symbolizes a beginning or an ending. She would like to have a relationship for all stages of her life. (“Most relationships seem so transitory/They're all good but not the permanent one.”)
The chorus is sung again.
The extended chorus is sung again to end the single.
Bedingfield is questioning her life, specifically dating. She wonders if she’s destined to by herself or if there is someone for her. She would like to get married but isn’t sure it’s going to happen. It can be an uncomfortable topic for some. It forces people to take a look at their mortality, which is what she’s doing.
The troubled “Soulmate” asks out loud a really difficult question some people rather not know.
