Rebellion is Upon Us: The Next Chapter of Sins of a Solar Empire Unveiled at GDC 2011

The time of Diplomacy is over. The length of the war and differing opinions on what should be done to bring the war to an end has led to a splintering of the groups involved. The controlling powers-that-be have depleted arsenals and seemed to have exhausted all efforts of diplomacy. Trapped in a stalemate, sub-factions have rebelled and broken off the main alignments. Rebellion is upon us.

The exciting next chapter in the awesome Sins of a Solar Empire universe has arrived. A full-fledged expansion to the original,Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion draws you even deeper into the galactic struggle for supremacy with appealing new factions, terrifyingly cool new ships of all sizes, enhanced lighting and particle effects for increased visual pleasure and all-new victory conditions.

“Rebellion is the first stand-alone expansion to the Sins of a Solar Empire universe,” said Brian Clair, director of publishing for Stardock. “Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion will add many new ships, refresh the visuals and integrate Impulse::Reactor features to support achievements, multiplayer leagues and much more.”

In the original award-winning Sins of a Solar Empire, developed by Ironclad Games, you are the leader of one of three civilizations embroiled in a galactic war, fighting for survival of your entire race against relentless foes. Your success will depend on your ability to manage your empire and command your vast fleets of starships to victory. Players will colonize new worlds, develop extensive trade networks, conduct research, fortify their empires with powerful starbases and fleets of ships, plus control the galaxy using the unique diplomacy system that reacts dynamically to the players’ actions.

New features of Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion include:

    • New Factions: Players decide whether to become Loyalists or Rebels, which unlocks a unique new tech tree granting them new technologies and ship variants.
    • New Titan-class ships:  Massive warships for each race that dwarf capital ships, these deadly new monsters are capable of wiping out entire enemy fleets single-handedly.
    • New Capital Ships:  A new capital ship class arrives, giving players new strategic options.
    • New Corvette-class ships:  Small, highly maneuverable light ships that are adept at a variety of tasks.
    • Loyalist and Rebel versions of some of the existing Sins’ frigates and cruisers, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
    • Updated lighting and particle effects for enhanced visuals.
    • New Victory Conditions to allow for more variety, differing strategies and shorter game sessions.
    • Additional capital ship ability levels, for greater strategic choice.
    • Impulse::Reactor support for chat, friends, achievements and more.

STILL NO STORYLINE though.

Yes, that sucks. But with a full scale expansion, rather than a micro-expansion, I'm okay with that. They can do a Micro-expansion for Rebellion that adds it. The story now has a fair amount of material to work with, what with the vasari attack, the advent attack, and the rebellion and all. I'd do the single player campaign plus maybe add the Vasari's secret enemy as the micro-expansion or full blown expansion after Rebellion.

Island Dog, I know this all just happened, but would it possible to get that screenshot in a wallpaper size?

From what I understand, a discount will be for Trinity owners.

will there also be a discount for the people who have both expansions but got them separately?

Hmmm... It looks like a big honkin gun to me. Or a giant pen. Maybe the TEC just wants to write you a love letter; on the surface of your homeworld and etched in the blood of the slaughtered children?

That's a wonderful dream isn't it?

edit: nvm

Does this discount include those who purchase all of the expansion individual or what? Sins vanilla + entrenchment + diplomacy is the same thing as if you purchased Trinity?

Hmmmm....I'm going to be rather ticked if Trinity people get a discount but us loyal fans that bought the original game and each expansion separately don't get squat....

Aside from that, I'm a little cautious about this...on one hand I'm excited there will be an expansion...on the other hand, adding things doesn't always make a game better or more balanced...they still haven't balanced the factions or dealt with the Cap carrier/LRF/Bomber spam, so I have a hard time believing they can pull it off with another expansion...

On the bright side, I do think the new additions and variety will make for a significantly stronger SP experience, which I very much look forward too...

From what I gather, trinity was rather buggy compared to the expansions that everyone who was smart bought seperately ;) And also since its been several years since all these games have been out I dont feel a discount is nessesary for loyal fans like myself to get a discount for buying all three seperatly rather than buying trinity.

so, Diplomacy failed... Time for Rebellion...

heehee, I already have that in the 7DS manual PDF that's coming with Beta.  Rebellion happened 54 years back, it was great!

Don't tell us about the new ships, particles, abilities, new research paths etc...

Tell us about:
This coming in 32-bit and 64-bit executables; the latter finally busting the dreaded 2GB memory limit.
The campaign and campaign editor you are going to put in.
Modding in infinite races and being able to play an 8 player gigantic map without blowing up SOASE'R like a Toast'R after 2 hours.
The new loading system that only loads up those racing playing the map.
The new system that doesn't have hidden hardcode limits; limits on sounds, textures, meshes, etc... because the entire engine is new.
How SOASE'R uses multiple CPU's instead of just 1.

If Rebellion is just a glam'd up SOASE using the pretty much the same old engine, I'll just cry and die a little inside -you don't want that Blair, do you?  Do you really wanna hurt me?  Do you really wanna make me cry?  Do you feel lucky?  Do you?

I hope SOASE'R rocks and can't wait to get 7DS into it.

Well, I'm not so much sold on "titanic" class ships, but everything else sounds great.  Can't wait.

Really didn't see this coming to be honest.  Thought that Trinity was the end for Sins 1.  In that respect, what will be the benefits to those who own Trinity and upgrade with the expansion versus those who buy it stand-alone?

also 64bit, but will settle for compiling with laa switch on

I really think people should temper their expectations a bit. We would all like major engine redesigns to allow for scripting, multithreading, and 64-bit executable.. but an expansion is an expansion, resources are still limited and these are major changes for an already old engine. They are just extremely unlikely to happen. We already know from a teaser interview a long time ago that IC's next game is not Sins 2, which means this engine won't be in use, and by the time they do start on Sins 2, this engine will be ancient. It just makes no sense to try and wiggle so much more out of the first generation Iron engine when it's basically looking to be a dead end.

I would, however, be happy with:

will settle for compiling with laa switch on

So we don't have to manually do it each patch.
