sigh.......if you look back over the posts. What you will see is your posts trying to state that the iPad is nothing more than a shiny, over-priced mediocre device. What you will see is my posts proving otherwise.

I'll tell you what, Monk, I don't give a flying f**k how useful you think the iPad is... IT IS NOT FOR ME!!!!!

Again you daft aussie.....lol......when did I actually do anything other than REFUTE your claims that the iPad is USELESS???   I don't want you to get one......hell you wouldn't even know how to use one if it fell into your lap obviously!   geeeeeeeeez

EDIT:

FOR THE FINAL TIME STARKERS!!!  RE-READ MY POSTS!!!  I HAVE NEVER TRIED IN ANY WAY TO CONVINCE YOU THAT AN IPAD WAS FOR YOU!!  OH MY GOD......I HAVE SIMPLY REFUTED YOUR BS CLAIMS THAT AN IPAD IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SHINY PIECE OF SHIT.   WOW YOU AUSSIES CAN BE OBTUSE......OMG!

Right.  I can control every Mac/PC and server in my business from almost anywhere in the world and very rarely now actually need to sit at my desk, but it's only an "over-priced shiny mediocre device"?   What kind of crack are you smoking.......lol...I think I should get me some of that......

Errr... But couldn't you do that from a $300 Acer? Or any Smartphone? Perhaps I missed something, but there isn't anything unique about the iPad that makes your use of it as a remote terminal feasible on it and it alone is there? I mean telnet is a basic part of the infrastructure of the internet...

That was only ONE of several things I presented as ways to prove the iPad is in fact MORE than a "shiny mediocre consumption device".   That is all friend.

EDIT:

btw.....I do have a $300 Acer ONE netbook and a 3G data-stick, as well as (if you had read my other posts you'd know this) an Xperia X1 "smartphone" but my point being......doing so from the iPad is that much more user-friendly and done with so much more ease one forgets the netbook and the 3 inch smart-phone in a jiffy!

As for the iPad being instant on what about the time it takes to lock on to a 3G or WiFi signal and the time it takes to input a password?

You don't need to continuously enter a password, and the signal is already detected while it "sleeps".  Instant-on.

So it works for you and your applications. It would not work for me and it's way too expensive.

You are right, it is probably not for you, but to say it is a "mediocre" device is nonsense.

Functionality aside (it's been beaten to death), when has anyone stood in Best Buy and heard another say "show me the tiniest flat panel TV you have"? How many folks pine for their 12" (or smaller) monitors? Even laptops have gotten larger (netbooks the notable exception). It seems consumers gravitate (for the most part)to as big as they can afford, or can carry.

So why the I-Pad or netbooks for that matter? IMO a big part is the cool factor, you don't really need a big screen to check e-mail, but let's face it when it comes down to it, do you really want to view your photo album on a Blackberry or watch "Avatar" on your I-Phone (yes, I realize the I-Pad is larger)? IMO this is just a gadget for someone that has to have it, for whatever personal or social reasons. As mentioned, it can't, in it's present form, sufficiently replace the things we do rely on daily. I'm sure if the I-phone is any indicator, Apple has banked on its faithful customers to buy I-Pad gen 2 the moment it comes out. This seems to perpetuate the feeding frenzy.

IMO it's unlikely to replace laptops that can be had for less than half the price. Cool if you want or have one, for me it would just be a partially redundant, unnecessary piece of hardware. Might be great for the 007 types. We'll need to give it a few more years to see if it improves enough to consistently impact more conventional hardware available , its best features (quick connect?) are shamelessly cloned elsewhere,  or if passes as a fad. Nothing can really be bad as long as it advances ideas for the future.

Monk, now you're just being downright insulting and obnoxious... all because I don't agree with your assessment.

Never mind... we're done here.

No problem and no worries.  Interestingly enough, at least to me anyway...I went to school with his wife, who is a fine artist in her own right.  We shared many, many art classes together, from Junior High all the way through HS.  You should Google him and check out some of his other paintings.  The guy is incredible.  His stuff looks SO real.

What?!?

starkers,

You've done nothing in this thread but claim that an iPad is not "reasonably usefull".

I called you on the fact that it seems rather pointless for you to spew BS claims without actually having used one (all you do is regurgitate shit you read on the internet) and showed you how a person can actually find it to be "reasonably useful"......you respond with "I still don't want one".

You're so obtuse you don't even realize it.  I never tried to get you to buy an iPad, I never cared if you agreed with me or not.  All I cared about was to show that your BLANKET-claims that an iPad is not reasonably useful are in fact FALSE.   PERIOD!

There are alot of laptops with touchscreen. They are same expensive like ipad. They are more powerful. They have 12-15.6" not 9.7" screen. They are more flexible in settings because they have no locked filesystem. They are more flexible in using plug-and-play because of usb ports, VGA, HDMI and other. And the main argument against ipad - u even cannot play Demigod on them))) I have iphone 2g myself and this is an awesome device despite being made an age ago. But omg, if u need an universal device for WORK and entertainment laptop have more suitable. U just accustomed for windows interface and forgot how  it cool to see your cpu loading. The only one thing against pcs is ipad mobility. yes it have less weight and more time between recharges. But at work (as at home too) u have usually coolest gadget ever called 220V socket. u never get ipad into backpacking to moutains so shis mobility still limited 4-8h autonomity and more from marketing than really something different than laptop.

Dont like holywars. Just some of my thoughts. Sry if have bad english.

What I see is two overly opinionated but myopic people demonstrating opposite ends of a new product's potential use/worth.

One thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread.

The other thinks it's as useless as tits on a bull.

Neither PROVES anything...other than how divergent opinions can be.

There are things on this planet people hold to be invaluable...but I'll often say...."if only there were two of them they'd be matching book-ends".

Get a grip, guys...and move on....;)

Yes, Jafo, except that I wasn't merely expressing an opinion.  I was ALSO stating that I have no use or need of an iPad... so it Doesn't matter how well somebody dresses it up or tries to prove its worth (like, to whom?), it still lacks as compared to my PC and I still don't want or need one.  That, it seems, is/was more the bone of contention....

It's like me singing the praises of the latest pair of Nike to a man with no feet... his lack of need negates the supposed value of the product.   Like me with the iPad.... I'm plugged in 24/7, mobility challenged and don't need a mobile device to perform less than I can already do.  Meaning the iPad IS as useless as tits on a bull, TO ME.

That's NOT myopic. 'Tis practical, tho.... saved myself  $600 to a grand to spend elsewhere.... on something i DO need.

Get a grip, guys...and move on

Done.... got me a grip on a Western Digital media player and I'm converting all my DVD's to AVI to play via the media player on the TV.

Just a little toilet humour concerning Apple.... read all about the iPood here :-"

The iPad made the local news here. A group of people are suing Apple because the iPad overheats when used outdoors.

Yeah, there are quite a few class action law suits against Apple around the world at present... over its iphone 4 and the iPad.   Funny in a way.. the boot being on the other foot.  Usually it's Apple suing somebody or other for copying a something or other.  Also funny, Apple generally only sues small operators... you don't hear of Apple law suits against Nokia, Samsung or LG, for example, for copying its cell phone technologies.

Hehe!!!  I couldn't help but interject when somebody was telling a friend of mine that he was getting an iphone 4, but would jailbreak it to do stuff that he wanted it to... I just had to say: "Why not get a phone that behaves and is already toilet trained??"   Last I heard he had instead gone a bought an unlocked Samsung 'touch' with all the features he wanted, and he can use it with any provider he likes.

Simply by typing a colon and a 'close parentheses'. A wink is the semi-colon and e 'close parentheses'.
