Before installing Twilight of the Arnor Read This

Today is Release Day! Yay!  I know that you've all been waiting for this day for a long time, but hopefully you'll think that the end result is worth it.  We're very happy with it here.  Twilight is now available for download!  If you have any problems after following these tips, you can hop on irc.stardock.com and we'll try to help you. :) Anyway, I have a few tips to make sure that that you don't have problems installing the full version of Twilight.

First, update Dark Avatar and Dread Lords if you haven't been keeping them up to date.  That way, you won't load up Twilight only to get an annoying pop up.

Second, un-install the beta of Twilight if you have it installed.  Check to make sure that the folder and all its contents were removed.  This will ensure that you get a clean install should avoid any problems of files not being fully updated, etc.

Third, if you decide to play Dark Avatar or Dread Lords while you wait, make sure that you exit the game before attempting to update any of the modules.  Otherwise, the installer may go to update a file only to find that it's been locked by the game and can't be removed.

Fourth, make sure that you remove or rename your My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor folder so that Twilight can start with a new one.  This will avoid any problems due to the custom race xml files not being updated, ship files with old information, etc.  Save games from the beta should still load, but you may want to start a new game anyway to be on the safe side.

If you are installing from SDC and you run into problems, go to Tools->Internet Settings and refresh the XML data, then restart SDC.  Whether you're installing from SDC or Impulse, make sure that you have the latest version.  You can also try switching servers.  All updates get posted on US-1 first and then the data has to sync to US-2, so if you start downloading immediately after we post it, your best bet is to be on US-1, but later in the day, US-2 might have less traffic if everyone is trying US-1.  If it doesn't show up, you may also need to un-check the Show Pre-Release versions option.

You only need to uninstall TA, Cari explicitly mentions that DL and DA can be installed and should be updated.

Indeed. It is still probably the only time I will ever uninstall it.

Pardon my ignorance, but to "uninstall," do I simply delete the TA folders that you mentioned above? Is that all there is to it? There does not appear to be a control-panel icon for the beta in Add/Remove programs.

If you use Impulse or SDC, you just right click it and choose uninstall.

You should use the Uninstall button in Stardock Central or Impulse.  You'll only need to delete the folder manually if something goes wrong during the un-install.

I only see the version .86.003 available to install. Is the full version supposed to be up? I am on the US-1 as far as I can tell.

Uncheck Show Pre-release if you have it on, and then go to Tools->Settings->Internet Settings and refresh your XML.  You may then need to go to Tools->Check for Application Updates as well.

Uncheck "Show pre-release versions" in SDC and then refresh :)

So excited... it's like Christmas - and thanks for the reminder to uninstall, Cari, as was far too excited to think of sensible things.

I didn't read the instructions well, did I? Thanks for your help and patience! =)

Just move your mods folder out and then you can move it back afterwards.

If you don't do a clean install of Twilight, you'll probably be sorry.

I keep getting a message telling me I need to have Administrator Rights to uninstall Twilight on the Arnor. Is this something with Stardock Central or am I dealing with a wacky issue with my laptop.

If your running vista try this. Right click on your stardock central link and select "Run as Administrator" that could help. If your installing through the cd open the cd and find setup.exe (might be install.exe I've got the digital version so I'm not sure) and try running it as an administrator as well.

If neither of those help I'd need more information (you should probably create your own thread).

Thanks, that was all I needed. How the heck do they expect you to know all this. I hate Vista/Microsoft/Bill Gates.

Enjoy the Karma

With Impulse you don't need to do that. Since SDC is older it needs administrator rights in order to do its job. I've actually set mine so that normal click makes it run under admin :P saves me an extra click.

If I purchase a digital download of the expansion, is there an easy way to backup the downloaded file for future re-installation? Or, once its active on my Stardock account will it just re-DL the whole thing if I ever have to reformat?

Well, it will re-download the whole thing if necessary but there is an easy way to back up your files. I don't know how you do it in Impulse (don't have it) but in Stardock Central you just right-click on the item you want to back up and there's an "Archive Application" option. It creates a single file that you can then burn to a CD/DVD, if you wish. If you need to reinstall, start SDC, go to File --> Restore Archive and point it to that file.

You can archive your installation and then copy the archive files to a CD or DVD for a quick re-install, but you can always download it from us again.  If you'd like to archive your files, it's as simple as right clicking on the application logo in Impulse and choosing Archive Application.
