Alliances?

What techs do you and the other race need to have to form an alliance? On the diplomacy screen I only have treaty and attack or peace options. Fairly far along in the game and even gave a bunch of tech to the prospective ally, but still no change. Thought maybe a tech near the end of the tech tree might be needed, but now 2 other AI have an alliance clearly in place. I'm still able to give ships..planets...techs...money and all that to my "ally" to help them out fighting the other 2 AI allies, but how exactly do we become allies officially. They even have asked to become more permanent allies, but still no option I can see to do it.

Not this again... will somebody PLEASE sticky one of the topics about this? I'm all for padding my post count (not that I have one here), but could I at least do it about different things? :p

Alliances: you and the AI in question must both have researched the Alliance tech (or you can just research it and give it to him). AND you must have a "Close" relationship (which happens to be the closest it can be). Until your relationship is Close, the Alliance option will NOT appear on the diplomacy screen. After that, the AI may or may not accept an alliance, depending on the circumstances (bribery usually works if it's being uncooperative ;)).

How does one get Close? I've tried massive tributes and never had it happen, even with like-aligned races.

I've yet to actually do it, but I've heard that one of the major keys is trade. The greater the percentage of their income that is dependent on trade with you, the closer they feel the relationship is. :) I also imagine morality, tribute, etc. all help improve the relationship.

Hm. OK. I guess I haven't had a game go on long enough to get more than 5 or 6 routes yet (I mostly play small maps).

I really don't like the fact that you can only ally with close races. There's such a thing as an alliance of convenience. I wouldn't call us "close" with UK, for a real world example. There should be such a concept as a military alliance with whoever it is that will benefit you.

Just be nice to the civ you want to ally with, give him ships if he is at war, trade tech and so. It takes quite awhile to become allies, its nothing that happens on two turns due to massive tribute... It like in real life, noone becomes allies overnight! ;)

"There's such a thing as an alliance of convenience."

I believe that is the point of the Declare War on...-type options. The Alliance option is meant to be much more significant than just a temporary partnership. After all, you can win the game through Alliances, and if they were easy to get you'd be able to win the game too easily.

"alliance of convenience"
Well, If you go to war with a very hated "oppressor" Then you can count on other races helping you with stuff: Money, tech, ships. They will like you more and more, the longer you fight. THis is the "Alliance" you are looking for.
However, if you greatly outpower them (or they think you do), then they will give you money occasionally, maybe even ships if you "kindly" demand them... but the they won't like you. This is also an "Aliance", but certainly under different signs.

Now if it is just the label of "Alliance" that you miss, then just make a list with all the folks in the galaxy, and when someon makes you a gift, stating that they like you, then you can simply write "Alliance" next to their name on your sheet ;)
