Has ANYONE been able to install from archive?

Has anyone been able to install the game, manual, and mulitmedia successfuly using the install from archive approach?

Not from a direct download/install but solely from archived versions.

Please let me know as I beginning to doubt my tenuous grip on sanity.

Kak, I've read your other posts. I'm sorry you're having this much grief m8. The single installation .exe should be ready to d/l soon. I know its another couple of hours d/l but it should solve your probs.

Don't stress.

Relax.

We love you Kakupacal :-)

heh heh!

What kills me is that if I could just figure out how to expand the multimedia file then i would be GOLDEN.

What is the SECRET? What utility can i use to expand these mp3s and bink video files into their normal state?

extac32.exe seems to maybe possibly work!

(maybe!)

dammit... thought i had it there

ah ha! if i double click within pkunzip i can pull out each file in an expanded format (the downside is that i have to place them manually, one at a time and remember exactly where they go...)

BUT it seems to work!

I unzipped the archives back into SDC's download directory, then just clicked on the install button. Worked for me!

Well, when I unzip the files - the extensions are all "truncated" - like galciv.exe is galciv.ex_ and manual.pdf is manual.pd_

because the files are further compressed within the zip file (yikes!) so that approach does not work for me

go figure

but my lame ass way seems to be working for me

Kakupacal, I have been able to install from archives partly.
I also read in another post that you can use your archives in another way too
Just unzip the archive to the temp directory of SDC (check Tools-settings-advanced what dir that is) and then click the normal install button for the respective program/update.
SDC will then only download the files that are not already in the temp dir (and all should already be there) so the install should start normally.

I hope that helps, I've not tried it myself.

btw: If you really want you can expand the *.ex_ files with the command 'expand' in windows.
so
"expand intro.bi_ intro.bik"
will get you want you want

but I wouldn't advise doing it by hand on every file ;)

I unzipped into a temp dir (preserving the dir structure).
Then I renamed everything with a "dos" prompt.
Out everything where it should go (?)

It had no effect :notsure:

I could have made a mistake but I was pretty careful.

I had some problems with this also. I finally figured out the zip had to go into the backup folder in the SDCentral dir. Then I just hit archive and restore existing and it extracted the zip for me.

Maybe I got lucky if you guys are already doing this?

Turk1701,

That is exactly how it is supposed to work.

But yesterday it had problems with the multimedia file.

Maybe fixed in the latest updates of SDC.

Single file is the way to go here, guys. I *almost* gave up on it before getting it to install directly the HDD and bypassing the archive entirely. The archive functions are "challenged," to say the least. I definitely don't want to have to relay on Stardock as my restore path in the future. Makes a good argument for making sure to get the CD, though... ;)

Go to help->about in SDC and make sure you have build 3.

OK. I'm on build 3, and it looks like it installed to my laptop from archive (downloaded on home PC) with everything - 100s of MBs of stuff in the application directories. BUT . . . Stardock Central only sees the application as installed. It does not recognize that the multimedia files, bonus pack and manual are installed. I'll start the game, and see what happens. :notsure:

If you unzip and archive to the temp dir of SDcentral and then just press install SDC will try downloading any file not already in that temp dir and then install.
If your archive is complete that means it will not download anyting but just install.
Works like a charm for me.

I meant:"If you unzip AN archive to the temp dir...."

fyi: I used this on the multimedia pack of Galciv,
and on the media and addon packs of The Corporate Machine.

After installing all the packs of galciv I created a new archive of that dir (rightclick Galciv, archive, selected app & extra files) for easy reinstalling later.

If people are still having problems with the download and archive functions, you will need to make sure you re-download and archive using the latest version of sdc build 3, otherwise they wont wory on a restore.

I've had a similar problem, but I think it might be possible to save re-downloading the entire thing using build 3. I stress, I HAVEN'T TESTED THIS YET. But it might be worth a try before you redownload 300mb+:

1 - Open your archive for Multimedia or BonusPak (any ZIP prog will do)
2 - See if it contains a file called gc1.xml
3 - If it does, remove it
4 - Look in Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\data\public\gc1\Production and find the file gc1_bonuspak.xml, gc1_multimedia.xml or whatever as appropriate
5 - Copy that file *into* the archive

Doing that will make the archive - AFAICS - identical to that which build 3 would produce as a result of the download..

Oops - you also need to open the file data.ini and add:

RegRootKey=drengin.net
Module=1
Parent=Galactic Civilizations

in the [Application] block..
