I'm addressing the topic from a purely political point of view. I think the fact that cannabis is illegal in the United States is a factor in the destruction of the country and a travesty of the principals this nation was founded upon. Now, especially, in this time of economic hardship, our country does not NEED to waste taxpayer funds on seeking out, prosecuting and punishing over 42% of the citizenry for engaging in a crime that does not harm anyone (http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1821697,00.html). We already discovered that prohibition was a bad idea during 1920-1933, when alcohol was illegal (and alcohol destroys more people than cannabis ever has).

I am deeply offended that you would equate the medicinal and yes, recreational, use of a plant to that of the heinous crimes of abuse of a child or the humiliation of rape. When it's YOUR relative who is going through chemo and the only thing that relieves their misery is a benign plant substance that puts them in jeopardy of being jailed and criminalized, THEN you come back and address this issue as if it were equal to rape and child abuse! Until then, just read up on it from all sides of the issue, rather than just the official one, because there are always two sides to every story.

I don't joke about medical problems, Karen...except my own. Cannabis has a place in pain/malignancy/anorexia and "wasting" diseases in the tablet and liquid forms. When used in a 'cigarette' form it has been linked as a carcinogen.

I'm assuming when you refer to cannabis in tablet and liquid forms you are referring to Marinol (which if one does not have medical insurance to cover it, cost a considerable amount more than a baggy of weed, or the cost of growing it yourself in an empty coffee can on your back porch). Read and understood. Clearly the Pulmonary delivery is more rapid, and more efficacious for some problems. Unfortunately, it has 'second hand' effects. If the person has a problem similar to Mr. McWilliams (acuity of symptoms) and was alone in a safe place, I would be the last person on this planet to tell him "No". I hope this is clear....?

Tasty foods and adventurous things have put me in a much worse pickle than any drug I've experimented with, (which is why I keep going back to the foods and the adventure--they're much more addictive to me, and readily available than drugs!)

Well then I hope you never have to watch a loved one suffer through cancer, knowing there is a relatively inexpensive substance that would ease their suffering, but would put them at risk for arrest. When they groan in pain, just tell them their relief is on par with child abuse and rape.

why go there? i have an aunt who has suffered with cancer for 12 years now and she's never considered smoking weed to deal with pain. neither did her husband who died of brain cancer 15 or 16 years ago.

This is an old argument...........I don't judge based on do or don't. Some of the finest people I've ever know do and some of the worst as well. I put it on par with speeding or cheating on your taxes.

I spent more years than I care to (or can) remember as a daily user. I don't believe that weed physically is any worse than cigarettes.......BUT , over time it becomes your lifestyle.......the obsession with getting it and then the avoidance of people and events where it's not acceptable.......eventually it becomes easier to just stay home......so you begin to miss out on life. I'd probably still be there if I didn't see my reflection in someone else and realized just how much I was missing....

Ask yourself WHY they never considered smoking weed to deal with their pain? Is it perhaps because the substance is ILLEGAL?Read up on the history of the illegalization of marijuana. It's ludicrous that government money is still being used to prosecute this!

And seriously...in the same category of rape and child abuse? Even if marijuana were as bad for a human body as alcohol and tobacco (which it is NOT -- do some research, get the facts -- nobody dies from a THC overdose), it wouldn't be on par with rape and child abuse! It MIGHT be on par with fornication and adultry, but that's as far as I'm willing to go!

The same could be said of anything, Lantec. Overeating, using foul language, drinking, smoking, thinking negative thoughts! It's not the substance, it's the personality disorder of the user! SOME people have an unhealthy relationship with drugs, and some have an unhealthy relationship with food, and some just have unhealthy relationships to anything! Does that mean that the person who can responsibly use that substance should be denied that substance, or put in the same category as rapists and child abusers? More pointedly, should the United States government, (the government of a free nation), be expending public tax dollars being the babysitters and nannies to those who aren't responsible in their use of any given substance?

Holy crap man.. i laughing my head off.... so drugs are something alien? it isnt of this world? have you ever tried any drugs? drugs can enhance the world around you it can help when the world is hard on you.... hell most of the population are drug users the only difference is that your state says some drugs is ok and some arent all people that look down on pot are hypochrites.. sleeping pills, happy pills, pain killers..... for me you can strike those and give me a joint instead it works better than any of them! and probably is better for me from a health standpoint...

The NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse), and all its employees, have a vested interest in keeping marijuana illegal. Using their official information solely as an authority is akin to me only using the information I get at NORML. folks, whether you like it or not, it is an illegal substance. why it's illegal is not relevant. when i found out my kid tried it, she received more grief from me than she ever had before. using it cost her a nice paying job a few years ago. fortunately, she came to her senses and is flying right these days.

4 years ago, my grandmother was admitted to a nursing home. i visted her every day until she died 15 months ago., while there one day, i ran into a high school classmate i hadn't seen since 1976. bob graduated in the top 10 of our class. to see him now, you wouldn't know it. he's a resident of the nursing home and had been for years. why is he there? according to bob, he's there due to years of alcohol and marijuana use/abuse. maybe he used the substance to an abusive degree, maybe he didn't. either way, he's in a bad way today because of it.

Why it is illegal is very much relevant, if you follow your thought train we would be mindless zombies walking around this earth. What if Newton didnt ask himself why the apple dropped out of the tree?? etc. Its imperative to make your own judgement on all causes else we will never evolve.

Marijuna wont put you in a nursing home.. alcohol will, and there we have the why again why use those drugs to that degree? It is probably not the drugs fault and if you would check it thru you will probably find that i am right that a psychological issue is much more likely the cause and that issue he is either born with or his society gave him so he turned to drugs. I think its weak and a easy way out to blame the drugs you as a person decides what to do with your life.

That being said i think softdrugs are OK hard drugs arent im not pro all drugs, i just dislike the way the goverment decides what and what we cant do to our own bodies. Rules to when you cant use them i agree to. But the choice should be your own if to(or not to) use them.

Really? So no matter what your government does, that makes it moral/just/correct? So we should still be a colony of England. And Hitler should have just gone on destroying the Jews, and good Germans should have continued to view Jews as illegal substances/enemies?

How you discipline your children is not my concern. What you personally choose to hale as "the right thing" is not my concern. What my government, (which should be abiding by the constitution and the bill of rights) says is "the right or wrong thing" IS my concern, BIG TIME! Which is why I, a non-smoker, non-toker, drinker of one drink a day on holidays, have my panties tied in such a knot over this issue. FACT: 42% of all United States citizens including the current President, have tried marijuana -- why are we jailing people for this? Why are we denying them scholarships, and getting them fired from jobs for a dirty pop pee test? If they're impaired at their job, FIRE THEM FOR THAT REASON! If they're driving wrecklessly, TICKET/FINE/JAIL them for driving wrecklessly. Why does there have to be the added "you're evil" stamp of "drug addict" too?
